Could it be the brushes, i remember when they went on my parents old kenwood it would make a similar noise, it was a while ago know and I can't remember if they got it repaired.Fibro-Warrior0

Brushes, intermittent connection somewhere possibly the switch or could be the lead. Or could be worn gear(s) or something not engaging properly.
