    Could it be the brushes, i remember when they went on my parents old kenwood it would make a similar noise, it was a while ago know and I can't remember if they got it repaired.

    Brushes, intermittent connection somewhere possibly the switch or could be the lead. Or could be worn gear(s) or something not engaging properly.
    It needs looking at. (obviously)
