If it is indeed the diverter valve, and if it's only stuck open a little bit, then the relatively small amount of hot water being allowed into the radiators will naturally rise to the top of the system.

You could try turning off all the upstairs radiators at their valves - I suspect you may find then that one or more downstairs radiators gets warm instead.

We had our mid-position valve changed because I didn't have the time to do it myself; the price was about £300; the valve itself was probably about £60-90.

Poor !!!!!! spent an getting the air out of the system after a refill; I'd got home as he was wrapping up and I'd forgotten to mention that the top radiator was behind a secret panel.

Its no coincidence the spark has fitted a new controller and this happened. It will be wired wrong, not all sparks can wire heating systems.

Are the radiators actually on or are they simply warm to to the touch due to the current ambient air temperature? It was 32C upstairs in my house last night and everything felt warm, including the rads.

All summer it really is a good idea to put the heating on for 1 min, once a week just to keep the valve getting stuck.

But in this case the is a good chance the spark did it wrong.
