Ex taking child abroad

We found getting back was more difficult than getting there.
At the time hubby and I were not married, we had his son and a friend of the son, so 3 surnames.
They were not worried about the children, but questioned why we were not married. So I turned to him and said, this is one for you to answer, why are we not married?
But seriously to take the friend we just had a letter from his parents saying that we had their permission and were also able to make decisions regards well-being (medical etc) if the need arose.0 -
I'd give them the birth certificate just in case. Some years back Ryan Air threatened not to let us on a flight to Glasgow (!), because my brother didn't have his children's birth certificates. They took the children aside and asked them one by one if he really was their father which for the four year old was upsetting.if i had known then what i know now0

I had no problems taking my teenagers to France after divorcing and re-marrying. No one asked us anything about the surname difference.0

And worthy of a complaint.0 -

Probably because she was old enough to no longer considered vulnerable.
Separated parents absconding to other countries with children are the reason things were tightened up.0 -
I have custody of my granddaughter, she has my surname but obviously is not my birth child. I always take the court order (I'm allowed to take her on holiday for a month legally without birth parent's consent) and a permission letter from my dd for the specific period. I have never been stopped or questioned but I know others in our situation who have.
I have Norwegian friends and culturally children in Norway take the father's surname and my friend (the mother) got stopped coming back in to the country because of this.
Best to have a letter just in caseDF as at 30/12/16

Thank you sheramber, that was very useful. I had a look at your link and found some other templates that will come in handy. I've bookmarked your link, thanks.0 -
Amazing how airlines are slagged straight off if some family manage to sneak a stolen child out of the country. But are also slagged off for having checks in place to ensure it doesn't happen0

My Polish colleague struggled with this. She had taken her (UK born) young son to Poland to visit grandparents no problem but had a horrible time trying to get back. He has a different skin colour to her and a different surname (his dad was born in India and he had his colouring and surname). He is also terribly shy and would not speak at all to the person questioning him if she really was his mother. My colleague and her husband were (and are) still together, she just hadn't taken his name (long story but she has a daughter from previous marriage with special needs who didn't want to change her name and wanted the same name as her mum so she just didn't take his).MFW - OP 10% each year to clear mortgage in 10 years!
