In the small print of the hire company I am using, it says:-

In case of a No-Deal Brexit UK customers will be required to present an International Driver’s Permit. For more information please visit https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit.

On the government website, it says:-

You will not need an IDP to drive in Ireland, even if there’s no deal.

I will be hiring the car in Ireland next month, so even though the above is conflicting, it won't affect me anyways... right?

AIUI if/when we leave the EU, our relationship with the Irish Republic will revert to what it was pre-EU, i.e. no IDP required.

It seems that, for once, the UK governement website is right.

Just to confuse things, do I need to get an IDP now before the whole Brexit thing to drive in Ireland next month?

Which part(s) of the gov.uk website, or my previous post, do you not understand?

I understood all of it, just my brain declined to notice the last few words of the first paragraph which read, no IDP required. My apologies.

Why would you. Nothing is going to happen until at least 31 October, and even then ;)
