Can I cancel decorator?

Yesterday we had a decorator come and view our kitchen, he gave us a verbal price which I accepted because he was available to do the job this coming Monday.
I am now having second thoughts as I have no idea as to the quality of his work, can I cancel?
I have just had decorator recommended by a friend who assures me of his expertise and that was the route I should have gone in the first place!

Give him a call and see what he says. He may be amenable, he may not.
Are there any terms over cancellation fees on his website or anywhere else?
You're more likely to get a good result if you tell him sooner rather than later.0 -
Your existing decorator might be able to give you references, and you might be able to pop round to look at his work. I'd be inclined to give him an opportunity to retain your business if he wants to do so.The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

He should have provided you with certain information in a durable medium - such as that by requesting the service begin early (before the end of the cancellation period) you would be liable for services provided up until you cancel.
If he hasnt provided you with any of that information then you can cancel without charge. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

Unholyangel your posts are some of the most knowledgeable on here.
But holy moly in the real world folk just get on with life and when we ask someone to do a job we stick by our word.
What is the world coming to when folk can't just say "Thanks for the quote I'll get back to you." or "That's fine when can you start".
Easy and no fannying around.0 -

Well, personally I wouldn't have hired him without having previous knowledge of his work. But thats because my dad was a painter & decorator in times where if there was 1 lump/bubble, you'd strip the whole room and start again from scratch, from your own pocket. Really encouraged them to do it right the first time around. Today, they seem to think if they do an okay job of their own house, they can be paid by other people to do it and call themselves a "professional".
As a result, I won't hire a painter & decorator because I know I can do a much better job than most "professionals" can.
But the OP asked if they have a legal right to cancel, and unless the trader has complied with their legal obligations, then they do indeed have the right to cancel without charge (definitely have the right to cancel in any event). If the trader hasn't complied with their obligations, then they only have themselves to blame. You keep using that word.
