Natwest question

Hello,

Looking for advice re. Natwest cards - thanks in advance!

I've had a credit card with Natwest since 2011, with a credit limit of £3,220. In the early years I was horribly irresponsible with it and missed lots of payments (but always made up the payments and never incurred a default). I believe that because of my payment issues, they 'blocked' the card and stopped me spending any more on it. Equally, they refused to send me a new card when the old one expired. They still won't send one now (I think when I apply online they request that I call them which I'm nervous to do!).

My credit record over the last 6 years shows no missed payments on that card and it's nearly paid off now. In fact my credit record on the whole is much improved.

My main current account is with Natwest and they've given me two loans over the past few years so I don't believe they've 'blacklisted' me in terms of giving me credit on the whole, but I'm wondering what might happen in future if I wanted to get a different Natwest credit card. Is it the case that, even though I've been responsible more recently, my irresponsible use of my NW card years back might put them off ever giving me a credit card again? As I said, my credit record is much improved so it may be that I'm better off going to another lender if I need a credit card in future - I guess I'm just curious as to how my past actions might have affected my relationship the NW credit cards specifically.

Thanks in advance, again.

What's the worst that can happen if you phone up to find out exactly what the status is with the card account?

You should obviously have been notified of any actions they took, but if the card itself has expired and is therefore unusable then I can't see why you wouldn't speak to them to establish what's happened and to ask them the same question you're posing here, which only they can answer.

If they'd wanted to withdraw all banking services from you because of past conduct then they'd have done so by now so I can't see your current account as being at risk, but personally I'd go elsewhere for your next credit card, which shouldn't be a problem if your credit record (as seen by lenders other than NatWest) is clean - check all three CRAs first and then try eligibility checkers before applying....
  • Phone them and ask them

Only they can decide and tell you whether they still wish to do business with you again or not

I'm still aggrieved when NatWest recently declined to renew my credit cards despite having an impeccable credit rating. If you dont make interest money for them by clearing the balance each month they arent interested in you it seems.
My advice - give them a call by all means, nothing to lose by it but enquire what interest they will charge and see how that compares to some of the other providers out there.

If you are banking with them at the moment maybe try the online facility to chat now and ask them. It might not be as bad as you think and maybe they didnt send a card because you werent using the account.

Thanks all - you're right I should just talk to them but still feel very guilty for having been so wreckless. Need to get over it and bite the bullet!
