Help. New Build Home Too Hot

I am after some hints and tips please.
We moved into our new build home a few months ago and it is a lot warmer than our previous 1930's semi. It has been hot but bearable for the last few months but this week we are really struggling to keep it cool.
Almost all of the rooms have windows which are on the south facing elevation of the house with the exception of the single bedroom.
We have tried keeping the curtains shut, this has made almost no difference at all. Last night when we got home the master bedroom was still 29 degrees C with the curtains shut all day the same temperature as it had been the day before.
We are out at work all day so can't leave the windows open all day for security reasons. We open them all up as soon as we get home.
We have found that we can get some cross breeze through the main bedroom by opening all of the windows and leaving the ensuite door open but even that wasn't enough last night so we got the desk fan out as well which worked a little bit but it was still 27 degrees in there when we got up this morning!
I'm sure we will appreciate the extra heat in the winter but right now any tips to cool it down would be gratefully received.

Heat reflecting thermal blinds can help reduce solar gain. Thermal linings on curtains similarly. Big fans tend to move more air more quietly.
But our solution has been to fit air to air split pack multi room air con units.
Current weather is not normal. Likely older homes are suffering too.0 -
External wooden shutters will work, that is what southern european homes have used for years.0

You can get mini-split air conditioners for relatively little, but whether or not it's worth it for the few weeks of the year is entirely your call.0

Our old 1930's home always stayed quite cool during this sort of weather. This new one has been hot since we moved in mid April.
Will look into those air con units thanks.0 -

North facing upstairs bedroom in a late 1920s semi - Temperature was hovering around 30°C in the afternoon. Currently at 29°C in there...Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0
