Natwest Step Account

Ello all,
I'm after some friendly advice. I have a Natwest step account. I know quite clearly that you can't get an overdraft charge on this account which is £28.00 pounds, as they don't accept overdrafts on this account. What i can't quite understand is how they can charge £38.00 for an unpaid Direct Debit charge. But you can setup direct debits on this type of account.
My question is this an unfair charge on the ammount? Compared to the cost of of an overdraft charge. Also they have refused to pay the direct debit and have not yet placed the charge onto my account. But i have now placed funds into the account to counter act on this.
Could i claim this back as unfair due to the fact they have rejected to pay they direct debit and just want free money from there customers?
Any information would be helpful guys & gals.
Thanks

Hiya, I too had a step account. Call them on 08456090000 and ask them to remove the charge as the funds are now in place.
They will do it believe it or not!
Hope it helped0 -
Ive just tried to get my unpaid dd charge refunded today and was on the phone for 45mins and got no where!!! Any ideas what I can do now??0

Nope Natwest refuse to give the money back due to the fact i requested for one in October which i actually got. I believe direct debit charge and unathourised overdraft payment are both the same thing and should cost the same. But it seems the banks don't.
Wish the goverment would stop letting the banks make money from people. Some people can't afford to pay that when they have low incomes or try to live on benefits.
I have a low income and struggle to pay all my bills. Worse as christmas is not far away.
There is no way it costs a bank £38.00 to refuse a direct debit. I would understand if they had paid the Direct debit and requested i paid the charge. But to refuse the payment and then charge is daylight robbery.
Its like i stated to them for cancelling my other current account card and had no card for over 2 weeks as the one i had was slightly damaged. What they forgot to tell me was they cancelled the card and i tried to use it in a local supermarket. When i asked for compensation on that all i got was a "sorry for your inconvience". While they gather interest from my money over a period of 2 weeks. I can't can access or use my card in a cash machine over a weekend.
We lend the banks our money but we get a low interest rate, when they loan our money to others they go for a full on high interest. So no normal customer wins just the greed banks0 -
Ive been given a number to complain to will post it when I get home. Whats annoyed me more is that because they took the charge out of my account i had money in there is to pay another dd and that bounce so they have now charged me for a second time..
am fuming...0 -
Try calling them again, otherwise put a claim in! I have, and got my money back. It was on the same account. Hope you get somewhere with them. Natwest charges are unfair.0

Whether its a goodwill gesture or not. The charges are way to high and are unacceptable. We lend the banks our money and we get a low interest from it. If we borrow money from a bank they place stupid high interest rates.
The customer never wins and the bank makes loads from this situation.
There is no way that it costs a bank £38.00 pounds to reject a direct debit. This is an automate service. I could understand if the diret debit was paid i would pay the charge. But the rejection of the direct debit and then to enforce the charge is unfair. Especially when its down to an adjudicator to make that decision.
Its ok for the bank to throw cheque books and ring there customers constantly to try and buy there new insurance products. Even when they have been told no on the first call. Its ok for Natwest to ring customers and pester then for that. But will not give a curtsey call to say about cancelling one of there customers debit cards.0
