Getting Locks Changed

Moved in 7 months ago into my new rental and wondering whether it's good practise to change the locks after moving in ?

Nothing particularly valuable in my apartment but just want to know your thoughts, as it looks to cost a fair bit ( £100 ) to get them changed. :j

How much? Buy a £1 screwdriver pack for Poundland and a lock, change it yourself. Do they teach nothing in school and university anymore . .

The OP can do it himself BUT
if the OP is not a DIY person what I suggest is to take Multiple photos throughout the dismantling process.

    Better be safe than sorry.

I know two adults in mid 20's who can't even use a washing machine never mind plumb one in!

And I've also come across one that didn't even know what a bank account was, let alone how to use one.

Youtube has plenty of vids on how to change the cylinder on a lock, how to measure it so you get the right cylinder etc.

So why after 7 months do you now want to change the locks ?
As a Landlord this would worry me !
Is the tenant trying to hide something like drugs, sub letting, growing drugs in the bedroom or loft.

As a tenant I'd be wondering why the landlord wanted to let themselves in.
  • As said changing locks is a 2 minute job, its literally one screw, lift the handle a bit, slide the old barrel out, lift handle, slide new barrel in, put screw in..... tadaaaa.

all you need to know is how long the barrel is to buy a new one again just take it out and measure it, there are videos on where you need to measure too for the right measurements.

We got a top of the line lock anti snap, anti yada yada yada cost 15 or 20 quid. Locksmith that i know said they are extremely difficult to get into for your average tealeaf but it also comes down to the rating of your door handle too.

So has the landlord or letting agents tried to enter the property while you were there or at work ?
You have lived in the property for 7 months so why Now ?
I can understand if you want to install a turn lock for fire safety or high security barrels if cheap/weak barrels fitted as standard in the exit doors.
Landlords well most landlords are not interested in popping into a BTL property every week to check on the tenant unless they watch to many episodes of Slum Landlord Nightmare Tenants.
However they can do inspections when they give tenants notice of at least 24 hours and have to do Gas Safe check/boiler service every year so please do not complain if you have to take a day off work to be in for the Gas Safe check.
