Gas CH or Gas fireplace?

Hello! I have a chimney in my new home, it probably doesn't have a liner but it does have a gas point for a gas fireplace. My question is... is it worth installing a gas fire, cheaper maintenance than running the boiler, better control of the heat maybe, more efficient possibly?
I live alone but have regular visitors, inc my parents, children, the 3-bed is rarely empty...
Or should I seal up the chimney and rely on the gas boiler, forget about investing in a gas fireplace, and not pay out to install one?
On a separate note, does anyone have any idea how much it may cost to get a cheaper gas fireplace, and to drop a two-storey liner into a chimney to support the flue? (I'm in the Cheshire area if that helps).
Thanks for your advice!

When redecorating we took our gas fire out - the room is plenty warm enough with a double radiator. We had fancied a gas log type but could really merit the expense. Now we have a more usable wall space.
In a previous property we had a log effect - - found it expensive to run as a lot of heat went up the chimney - but it was nice to look at.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Ive got single radiators in my house and never needed to use the fireplace.
Id be more inclined to go down the route of smart thermostats for specific space heating. Depending what you need doing to get a gas fire installed, i can imagine itll work out cheaper too.0
