That's a very random set of very different vehicles.
A Focus-sized hatch, a tiny citycar, and a Meriva-sized sprogbus. If you like the Mondeo - downsize to a Focus? (Boring answer I know) Driving wise they feel quite similar.0 -
I went from a MK3 Mondeo 5 door to a Mk 3 Focus 5 door and the only thing I couldn't get in the back was a washing machine.I need to think of something new here...0

Intriguingly, when driving a loaner ford Ka, son & I could Just Fit a tumble drier into it. It may become a requirement, as this house abuses the white goods (let's not start on the vehicles) severely.
Also, I Scout &, as air rifle instructor, I need to shuttle rifles from the armoury to the range & back. I may sew a folding "picnic bag" to obscure what's actually in the back. Certainly I'll need to take a cardboard box to check stowage dimensions! (Mondeos can Spoil you!)
Do 5 doors cost more to insure than 3 door vehicles?0 -

I'm looking for something small enough to convince my sons that even if they could all get in, they couldn't sit in comfort (and they bicker in the Mondeo)
I think a folding gun rack in the backseat/bootspace is my way to go but I have taken a Bren transit case to a garage before now... The sales staff recognised the kicked-by-a-chicken & decided Not To Ask.
I have no quarrel with green but the ideal vehicle needs to be able to do Mway work without giving me or other road users conniptions so I think a van may not quite meet the ideal spec for the commuting vehicle.
For holiday haulage, I have to say it sounds fearsome tempting!0 -
Skoda Fabia (or the estate version if you want a larger boot). VW engineering at a cheaper price point. A good choice of engine sizes to pick from, one of which should meet your motorway requirement.
I recently went with my nephew to help him buy a Fabia, he's 6'7 tall so can confirm there is plenty of legroom (although not for the person behind him), plus it was pretty reasonable to insure....for a newly qualified driver."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

But I do need to get the groceries & run the husband about occasionally.. It'll be far more fun than a hatchback.
The 1.8 petrol engine fitted to all B roadsters (there was a 3.5 V8 option using the Land Rover engine in the GT) is not the most sprightly thing in the world, but will achieve 70mph with plenty to spare and merging on the motorway wouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, SU carburettors are relatively easy to keep in tune, but you'd need to learn about timing and points gaps as they're likely to need attention more frequently than at the annual service. And to check the oil level regularly as wear in the bores and valve guides is a thing on these so they consume oil.
(My first car had an 1800 'B' series engine 30 years ago, so I have plenty of experience of them, but it was fitted in a Morris Marina)

OK - for exciting classic options and boot space - Reliant Scimitar GTE or if you up the budget a bit - Lynx EventerI need to think of something new here...0
