Why did my card get refused?

Went into Asda last night and tried to you my debit card. Soon as they put it in the chip and pin machine it said not accepted... same happened when they swiped it. Yet I went out to the cashpoint and withdrew money no problem???? It wouldn't even go through the authorisation process it just said not accepted straight away... never had this problem before in any store/cashpoint/online including that same asda store???
Was plenty of money in there as well... and the cashpoint worked fine!
any ideas?

The chip could be a bit faulty (I think the top layer on them becomes damaged) Could just be time for a new card.0
