Traveling whilst renewing passport

We need to renew our passport as having a big trip in jan

If we apply online to renew our passport ( were in holiday home abroad at moment)
Can we travel back to uk on our present passport within the next 2 weeks?

You need to send your old passport in even if you apply online.

You could start the application in advance of getting back to the UK and send your passport when you get back.

It should not typically take any longer than 2-3 weeks (often less) for a passport renewal.

Surely no hurry if you're not going until January?

If you are abroad you have to use the overseas route, and send your old passport to the office that deals with the country you are in. You must be in the uk to submit a UK application
If you are not going until January there’s plenty of time if you will be back in the uk before then.

Had to re read the OP but yes of course you can travel back on your passport.

Get a new 1 sorted when you get back.
