No that will not work,as your not calling a USA number.
You can use one of the access numbers listed here :http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/ukcallchecker/mobile-numbers/weekday
You will be charged whether your connected or not.
Your friend will pay for the Intl Leg of call UK to USA.0 -
As already mentioned the aspect of WHERE in the world your friend is, is 100% irrelevant to YOU as phoner - their phone number remains the same ie 07..... in the UK. It is only relevant to THEM as call receiver as THEY will be charged to receive the phone call as they are outside the UK - and unlike the EU which has capped the mobile phone companies' greed, the USA hasn't so those receipt charges could be VERY significant - eg my own Virgin Mobile PAYG DD tariff would cost me 80 pence per minute with a 1 minute minimum charge!
Be far better off doing as much as possible by SMS - as it's likely you'll be able to send SMS free/cheaply to another UK SMS number; and your friend will probably be on a tariff that allows for RECEIPT of SMS messages free of charge too (though sending them c/be expensive - eg 35p/SMS).0 -
So for me to phone her it would cost me the same as normal and I could use my inclusive Mins on my contract as normal, but it would cost her to receive?0

(1). Yes.So for me to phone her it would cost me the same as normal and I could use my inclusive Mins on my contract as normal, but it would cost her to receive?
(2). Yes, probably a lot too!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
If practical, try arrange for your friend to be somewhere near a landline, then you can phone her via various callthrough services for peanuts:

Or use a voip account like voipcheap.com, webcallsdirect, smsdiscount etc, they all offer calls to the US for free.0
