Replacing electric with gas central heating

Hi,

We’re thinking of buying a property (ground/first floor split level 3bed maisonette in a local authority block) that has an immersion heater for water and electric heaters in all the rooms.

We would ideally want to have gas central heating so would be looking to take out the immersion tank and electric heaters and replace with a combi boiler and radiators. Has anyone done something similar in a similar size property? I’d be interested to hear people’s experiences of how much it cost / how long it took / how much of a nightmare it was? I’m guessing it’d be a whole lot better to do before we move in, but we might not have time...

Thanks in advance!

You need to contact your gas distributor about getting a supply to the property - has anyone else got gas in the block ? Won't be cheap

Is the freeholder still the LA - will they permit it ?

    Internally boiler and rads - £5000 ?

Apparently there is a mains gas supply to the block, the current owner just isn’t using it!

Think owner is LA but managed by Clarion. Would we need permission if there is already a gas main supply?

You will need a quote from Clarion and the LA agreement

Even if there is a gas supply to inside the flat already, you will need freeholder's permission to vent the flue to the outside.

Also check whether you have concrete floors on either or both levels. That will affect where you can run pipes to radiators.

Thank you, hadn’t thought of the concrete floor point!
