    If it was 2x6 it could span 10ft, From memory 2x4 can only span 6ft, any more and it will bend/deflect to much and crack the plasterboard.

    If its resting on an internal wall, then that to the outside wall would be the span, im guessing its way more than 5 ft. You really need to measure the wood and get a real idea of the actual span.

    They do also likely serve as part of the roof to stop the roof spreading and pushing out the walls.
