My husband has done something to his laptop.
The welcome screen loads but it then goes black and he gets a message

Windows may be corrupt. Try running a Windows repair0

On another machine, download and create a Linux Live DVD. (Can be a DVD or a USB pendrive version)
On the subject laptop, boot from the Live DVD and once in, plug in a USB HDD and backup any data you need to retrieve. (Google will help you with how to do these things in whichever Linux version you use).
Once the backup is done then you can look at creating a Windows installer on USB and simply reformat and reinstall Windows. If you've already got a data backup then you could proceed straight to this step.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to offer alternative recovery options.
