Empty bottles taken off people in security

I know about 12 people this year that took empty and dry bottles through security only to be confiscated by security! They were empty water and soft drinks bottles. Different airports - Manchester, Stansted and Birmingham.

Anyone who had this? Why were my friends and relatives caught out? This is why I am not risking taking an empty bottle through security.

They got their water through meal deals at Boots and Superdrug

Personally I've never had an issue taking my empty metal water bottle though security, this year alone i've been though 9 airports, Birmingham being one of them.
But I've never tried taking a soft drinks bottle.
I've always have it separate with my ipad and unscrew the lid.
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada

Always take my refillable bottle and not had an issue.
Apart from on the way back when I'd frozen the water in the bottle and was trying frantically to melt it to empty it before security.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    When did they travel?

This link specifically about Manchester Airport mentions a scheme to promote water bottle refills.

Never had any problem taking an empty bottle through security at any U.K. airport.

Are you sure they just didn't think it was rubbish? I've had no problems in the last couple of year taking a water bottle through security (a reusable and an evian bottle)

Been through Manchester, Stansted and Birmingham this year. I've seen people take their empty plastic bottles through no problem. It is being encouraged with water points for free water after security

We're getting this story third-hand so I'm reserving judgement.

I've seen it happen, I think you need to be nice but firm and if need be ask to speak to the supervisor.

But people do not like to get to the airport early and deal with any problems do they?

More the likely answer, no time to argue.
