Looking for ideas for 14 yr old boy's bedroom

Hi all,
Feel its about time that my son spent time in his room rather than in front of the tv/computer downstairs as I think school work/exams etc. will start to get serious soon and would like to get him into the habit of going to his "space" so I'd like to do up his bedroom (never done it before, he's just had the bog standard bed/wardrobe/drawers etc).
Its not a huge room but I'm looking for ideas of what I put in it. I've asked him to come up wth suggestions but, apart from a Wii and a personal computer (no surprise there then!) not much else. I'm thinkng along the lines of things I can buy in Ikea (the catelogue just shows a very young child's room) to keep the cost down.
What would you suggest furniture-wise for a teenager apart and any or fun things to create his own space. He's got a cheap tv/dvd player and cd player but anything else?
Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks.

I would say a desk, but check with him he'd actually use it (I preferred my stuff sprawled out on the floor- more room!). Fun things- depends what he's into. If he has friends over then things like beanbags for sitting on would go down well, but if he's always out he may not need them. I think you need to make suggestions to him.Purple Penguin Power!

I bought my son an adult cabin bed with cupboard and draws underneath so I could do away with the chest of draws. This makes space for a desk for [strike]his[/strike] my laptop. He just has a wardrobe, small bedside cabinet and bookcase.
I'm thinking of taking the bookcase out as he doesn't have that many books any more.
I also made new curtains and bedding in a more grown up patterned material.
Bean bags are a nice idea.
Ask him what he would like. The more involved he is and using his ideas, the more time he will want to spend in there. Don't turn him into a recluse though. I have a strictly no food in the bedroom rule.

At his age I regularly did my homework on a beanbag...lol. Actually I saw something recently that caught my eye - a beanbag lap desk:

The loft style beds that Ikea do seem really fun, but he is going to be prepared to clamber up and down to it?
This Ikea link should show you a number of different looks for teenagers bedrooms - maybe you could discuss it with him?

id say at age 14 he`d probably want a more "grown up" bedroom. we are just about to revamp my 15 yr old lads room and im looking more long term at it, as in a couple of years he`ll be a fully fledged adult in his own right. im going to buy furniture for the room that will still look nice after he might of flown the nest (although he did tell me the other day he was going to live with me till he was 63  )we have decided on a pine wardrobe/chest of drawers and a bed with a pull out bed underneath for sleepovers, if i had room i`d get him a double bed. a lick of paint on the walls of his choice and stainless steel accessories (sp) of his choice. good luck...angchris xxproper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!

My DS2 had a "bedsit" type of room that he planned when he was 16, until he left for Uni..... He chose the bed, a double loft bed from IKEA, we had a double futon needing space, so he had that underneath as sofa/spare bed for his mates, he had a desk & a little table with his TV on too. He had his wardrobe in a cupboard put between the walls between his room & mine (my room had the other side of it).
He decorated it all himself too, one wall was all his band posters, gig tickets, pictures etc as a huge montage, one wall was stripes, one was plain with a big orange circle on it! Red blind from IKEA, some cheap Asda duvet covers to coordinate & he was sorted!0 -
This will probably be the last time you decorate until he either moves out or hes alot older, so make sure its suitable for an adult.
When I re did my room I kept it a nice simple design, a bed with storage underneath, a desk (didnt have a big desk as didnt have the room) and some drawers for my little clothes. Then a wardrobe.
We did this when I was 15 and its lasted me till now (Im 20) and I have no plans of ever doing anything to it!!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
If he's anything like my DS when he was 14 then a skip would be useful!0

A loft bed is quite nice, because it can be suitable until he gets a little older, early twenties. There is also storage underneath, which you can use for a desk, computer, and sometimes they come with a sofa which pulls out to a spare bed for friends. A TV wall unit - with the arm..always handy for space saving.
You can also use the rails on the ends of the bed to hang storage bags on, like laundry, or canvas shoe holders. Ikea do a hanging storage tube, which is about £3.99, which can house all sorts.
Ikea also sell loft beds
Paint the walls plain, then get add a box canvas here and there, painted abstractly, or even get some prints of album covers and hang them up.
A bright rug, a couple of cupboards and hopefully job done!0 -
My son is 10.
We decorated his room earlier this year. He's just got plain blue walls, and a blue carpet. His curtains, bedding and lamp shade are from the Sunderland football club shop. I figured it would be easier changing the accessories if he decided he was too old for football stuff rather than redecorating!
He picked a high sleeper bed with a futon style sofa bed underneath. It means he's got somewhere to sit with his mates and he's got an old TV with DVD player and PS2 in there. It also doubles up as a spare bed in case anyone wants to stay over.
He's also got a desk to do his homework on.
My son loves his room and is really pleased with it.Here I go again on my own....0 -
You could either go incredibly plain or to an extreme and create a cool room of formula one racing cars with a wall decoration, extremely sophisticated.

I am currently waiting for my order to arrive.
you could always do it together so it ends up being a nice bonding session.0
