Won't tell me if I am covered until I claim?

Just called Tesco Pet Insurance to ask if my pet would be covered if I were to do tests with the vet etc. They said they couldn't tell me until I make the claim as they need to go through the whole claim in detail before making a decision.

I understand the claim has to be looked at, analysed etc, but shouldn't they be able to give me an indication?

Whenever I have had to make a claim under health insurance, they have always told me on the phone whether i would be covered.

They can't say whether it will be covered as it will depend on why they are done- are they necessary or are they just elective tests.

Are they connected to a claimable condition or will they be excluded as linked to a condition that is not covered., such as a pre existing condition that existed before the policy was taken out.

You would rightly complain of they said that it is covered then something in your pet's medical history meant the claim was not allowable.

All pet insurance state they cannot advise if they will cover a claim before full details have been submitted.
Sometimes they will discuss it with the vet.

You need to go to your vet first. If tests are necessary then the vet will advise you of which are required. Then contact the insurance company if the vet cannot tell you if you are covered for the tests.

Get your vet to contact Tesco Insurance for preauthorisation.
