'Lick of paint' to bathroom?

Options
How much should I pay someone (labour and materials) to give 'a lick of paint' to a bathroom in rural Wales? They have suggested £200: is this fair or a comedy routine?

Comedy. I got a "local handyman" who did the following, over about 2 days, for me, for about £240 all told. £15/hour he charged:

    Paint the hall/stairs wall.
    Gloss the front door, outside
Gloss the banister rail and the spindles.

Realign/move the gate and fixings so it's all neat/secure
Fit a new external wall mounted postbox
Fit 3 bolts to 2 gates
Remove fixings and fill holes where 5 floating shelves had been
    Secure/refix a dodgy curtain rail
    Fit 3 venetian blinds
Few other bits and bobs that I'll remember in a bit.

I think you can do better ... he doesn't want the work.

Wow: bet he is from Poland. And I hope that those two days earned him more than a couple of hundred.

If you want someone to slap paint around then pay them minimum wage, no problem. There are plenty of people out there calling themselves decorators without the skill or patience of a good one.

Proper decorating is all about attention to detail and the preparation work in getting a smooth surface to paint on and it takes time.

I don't know anything about the person you had in, or their own personal standards, but that isn't that far off what a proper decorator would charge for a day's work at about £20 an hour. At some point you're also supposed to wait between coats.

Little digs about the standards in this country aren't properly placed if you don't actually want to pay proper money because you don't want a proper job. There are people out there that care about what they do, that deserve to earn a living doing so.

I pay me self employed decorator £130 a day. It'll be a days work to do a decent job in a bathroom. Add paints and consumables, £200 is on the mark.
