Long story, will try to keep it short.
We moved to an old bungalow in 1999. In 2000 had a conservatory built and an extension to the kitchen, both with polycarbonate roofs. In 2018 both began to leak. March 2019 after getting several prices, paid a deposit and booked dates for work to commence on June 24th. At each visit from a staff member we stressed that the floor and matching window ledge were not being changed.. and the tiles could not be bought now.
June 24th 2 men arrive, off load all the equipment etc. Later a 3rd man arrives at which point the roof was already off, 3rd man decides to check measurement and finds they differ across the width by 4 inches/100ml. Work stops, the surveyor is booked for Tuesday, arrives, tells us we are to remove the window ledge. We dispute. He later leaves after much huddling at the end of the garden, shaking of heads and gesticulating of arms. Phone calls are made.
It transpires he admits to making an error and so a new U shaped window sill is ordered. All work stops except to replace our roof with a plyboard one to protect the floor and my 2 leather sofas which are too big to get into the house. I should explain at this point that we have always used the room as a 'normal room, I.E. it had sofas, tv, sideboard, coffee table etc... All of which we had tried to get into other rooms without much success. It rains overnight so 4.30 A.M. finds me looking for buckets to save my floor from getting wet as had my sofas.
No work Tuesday.
Wednesday they all arrive, as does the new sill and work begins. The sofas go into the garden under a tarp. The whole conservatory is down, it starts to be rebuilt.
Thursday it continues... but does seem a little rushed, we assume because they have lost time and because in spite of us booking the dates 3 months earlier, some holidays had been booked and so there was to be no work that Friday or Monday although we were guaranteed it would be weatherproof by Friday.
We are told Thursday evening that some one would be here on Friday after all to glaze it and make weatherproof. 9.00 no-one here... I chase up and get told no one would be as indicated before, I dispute and 2 men arrive finally. However we had seen that the whole roof etc had twisted and now had a 2 inch gap between the wall and the sides meaning no glass could be fitted. 4 hours later someone arrived with chemical fixings and the glass was partially in but no French doors so knowing we had both badgers and foxes that visited we had to block them and cover the sofas indoors too.
Monday, no work.
Tuesday 4 men arrived. Glass now fully in, other work being done. Our roof lantern was starting to be constructed... It had a faulty part which was ordered. Everything stopped for this to arrive.
Wednesday, 2 men and bit and bobs being done; mainly clearing stuff, but the frame for roof lantern now in place. We find out the part had been delivered .. where? Unknown
Thursday we find it hadn't... 're ordered, will arrive Friday. It did.
Following Monday, lantern built and put into place.
Tuesday we take a closer look at said lantern and find that it is smaller than shown on the plans; the aperture should be 1800 by 900ml, it is 1740 by 740ml. Not a lot but it means that the surround is much larger than we wanted.
Someone comes from the company and ( logicly) explains why... We aren't convinced but have no choice but to accept. However there has been now apology made, not one ' sorry, but you know how it goes' or that sort of thing.
As we were told 2 weeks... and it took 3... and even now we still have work to be finished, would you expect some kind of discount?

Put your complaint to them and see how they respond.

    Far too long a story.

Inefficient measuring and fitting in a nutshell. Jobs overrunning and being a bit 'messier' than original estimate is as common as summer rain.

I'd be more interested in getting the problems fixed than a discount. Start asking for money off before they've finished and you will alienate them. Having to send teams out more times for snagging is something they won't want to do as its loss making. You need to keep them onside until its satisfactory.

Hopefully you have kept some funds back until the niggles are resolved.

I did try to keep to the point but wanted to be fair in what I said.
Yes we have kept money back... but expecting them to want payment in full as we have had comments about they've lost money due to unpaid wages due to lost days, had to replace the incorrectly sized sill, and it's taken longer than they expected too. We know of a job they have that's costing someone £175,000 and know they've been sending some of 'our' team to assist on that on the odd occasion ... It was mentioned in passing by one of them. Just feel a bit peeved. We allowed an extra week but didn't seriously think it would be needed. Think I just feel better having had a rant.!
