How much to charge for a lift?

How much to quote a 'friend' to pick them up at 3am?

I don't really want to do special mate's rates and want to take into account not just fuel but also wear and tear and those other factors.

I drive a 67 plate (so fairly new) Seat Ibiza 1.4 engine I think. It does about 60 MPG. Unleaded.

The journey is 66 miles in total. I drive pretty economically.

It'll also be 3am on a Saturday.

Does your insurance cover you for paying passengers?

No it's a bit cheeky of me I know
  • How about just be a decent person and do it for the sake of being a good friend. If you can’t do it from friendship then decline the “help”

Then just take enough to cover the fuel.

If the friend is a good one, you'll get a good deed done for you in return.

Otherwise, say you can't do it.
  • What do you want in return for giving this lift?

Personally if it was a friend I wouldn't be expecting to charge anything but if they offered to cover the fuel cost that would be nice.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

It's not someone I'm particularly close to so money would be nice.

So about a gallon of petrol at £5.60-ish? Wear, tear, non-friend-status and inconvenience -- call it a tenner?

That would only matter if OP was making a profit. Covering costs isn't an issue, so something like the HMRC allowed rate of 45p/mile would probably be OK.

Personally for a friend I'd do it free and expect them to return the favour if/when necessary. But if money is tight it's reasonable to ask them to pay, and they may feel better paying anyway.

If it's at 3am and you're going on motorways, check for closures, they seem to close motorways overnight for fun these days, last 3 late night motorway trips I've done I've encountered closures. You can check here https://highwaysengland.co.uk/roadworks-search/

    So would £30 sound reasonable?
  • Guess I’m lucky not to have a “friend” like you.

You should do it from just being a good person, maybe a you’ll need a favour from a friend one day.

If a friend just helped me out I would personally give them something anyway, prob £20, however I’d feel a little bit offended if they asked for money.
