Loft insulation quote....

Had a man around this morning who went up into the loft and gave us a quote to have it insulated, we have no insulation up there at all at the minute.

The price he quoted was £199 this is for fitting 45sqm x 250mm of insulator and insulating 6 metres or piping as well as the cold water tank.

Does anyone know if this is a fair price or not? (we do not claim any of the benefits that would entitle us to a grant/discount).

I thought about doing it myself but im a rather large and the loft is very very tight so its not really an option.

  • Good morning: The price sounds reasonable...insulating a loft is filthy job:eek: . We had a quote for £260 down here in Kent (2 bed semi-bungalow).

i paid almost £200 for the supply only of insulation for my loft - around 100sq m.
I had to do it myself - i say "had to" - i'm not finished it yet after several months - it's an awkward, unpleasant job - cold in the loft to start and sweating after a few minutes because you need to cover as much skin as possible to avoid irritation from the glass wool.

For comfort, get another quote and see what it comes in at - even play them off against each other ot see if the price drops.

On the face of it, the price seems not too bad (you don't say where you are) and it's important the insulation is placed properly - we had insulation already and just added to it - but many areas of the original insulation had been moved to fit lights in the ceiling, fit house alarm etc and much of the ceiling wasn't insulated. I'm fixing it as i go so make sure that whoever lays it, does so properly and doesn't just make some noise and leave it lying.

  • Check your local council or people like EDF (linky) who offer grant assisted installs of insulation. I've just had a flat I own done and the £255 standard fee I was charged was not much more than I could buy the materials from in Wickes.

  • Hi,

I've just improved the insulation in my loft. I used Knauf 100mm loft insulation, bought it from my local builders merchant at £28.60 per roll. Each roll covers 13.89sq. m

i,d say thats a pretty reasonable quote, considering we sell(and most others) a roll of loft roll for around £28 and its hellish stuff to use unless u wear the right clothing

I'm noticing the price others paid for insulation and realise now what a great deal i got.
My mate got it through his work's account although i had to pay for it.
i got it for around £12 per roll.
300mm thick too and it seems good quality stuff
