SDP Stopped

Hi All,

I have recently taken a friend in who basicly sleeps on my sofa while they are looking for a job I have done this to prevent them being homeless and the council would not have duty to care as they are not from the local area.

They claim UC at the 317.18 rate.

However with the loss of my £65.85 a week I am at a loss as this is now £263 a month down on my finances which were already streched

They could claim careers allowance but for every £1 they would get it seems like they would lose £1 of UC so for £66 Careers they would lose £66 of UC income

Careers element of uc is only £160 a month still £103 short of the what I was getting.

Any help or advice please

The reason the SDP has stopped is because of the person that's living with you. If this person cares for you for at least 35 hours per week they could claim the carers element of UC, no need to claim carers allowance along side UC.

The only advantage to claiming carers allowance when claiming UC is the class 1 NI that's paid with the carers allowance, unless of course you live in Scotland.

Other than this i'm not sure what other advice you want?

If this person is caring for you, you are no longer "living alone or treated as living alone" so there is no entitlement to SDP.

As I have already stated they do NOT care for me in any way shape or form. The only reason the DWP are aware of them is because I had to let council tax know as I don't wish to be defaurding the system

As they do not care for you then they won't be able to claim the carers element of UC or carers allowance.

You local council and DWP do very often share information with each other, which is why they knew.

If the person moves out in the future then you'll be able to re-claim the SDP and it will be paid from the day they move out, providing the other criteria applies.

Can they give you rent? money towards bill etc out of their UC? the council may not want to house them but they are still entailed to UC but possibly not to "free load" off you.
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada

They can but they get 317 to last an entire month including bus passes and such comes to a massive £70 a month for a first month ticket.

Also they have phone bill and some previous debt so at most they can afford £150 towards costs which is 113 less than sdp
