Advise needed please on travel insurance

I will try to cut a very long story short. We went to Gran Canaries for our Wedding Anniversary week. We made the mistake of using the coach transfer as we arrived on the island late at night and our hotel was on the far side of the island so we knew we would have difficulty finding the hotel in the dark if we hired a car. We were told we could not take our hand luggage on to the coach as there was no room so other than my handbag everything else had to go into the hold underneath. We were the very last stop so arrived at the hotel at 2.30 in the morning to find our one bag missing. The driver just shrugged and said 'You ring' and drove off. We rang the emergency number and after much ringing around the bag was found the next day at another hotel with another couple who had 'returned home unwell'. We had to get a taxi to fetch the bag as the coach company could not send it!. On collecting it we found our holiday money had been stolen from inside, luckily that was the only thing missing. We then spent the next three days traipsing around every police station in the area to sort a police report etc as we had to sort translations etc so we had lots of taxi fares and wasted days etc not to mention the holiday itself was ruined. we have now been told by our holiday insurance that as the bag was 'not in our possession' and in the hand of a carrier' they will not pay out!. they will not cover any part of the claim. is there anything we can do? any help greatly appreciated. also the holiday company know the people who stole the money so surely they can claim or we can sue somehow

Your money should have been in your handbag - good luck with your claim but I would not pay out if I was responsible for your it.

Have you contacted the coach company? Or the company that arranged the transfer?

I would go back to your insurance company because usually they cover for things like lost luggage/items when it's on a plane or transport. For cash, how much were you covered for? Some basic insurance may only cover a couple of hundred, unless you get the premium insurance. Have you read your policy documents you received? Just double check it to make sure the insurance company aren't trying to fob you off.

I would recommend on your next trip to not put holiday money in your suitcase/hand luggage bag. Always keep it on you, what if your passport was in that bag, that would have been even worse!

The holiday company don't know the couple stole the money. How can you or the company prove the money was in there, how much there was, and that it was them who took it?

Never ever have credit cards, money, passport, tickets in anything other than hand luggage that stays with you at all times.

I don't think you stand any chance with insurance simply because luggage implies clothes, toiletries etc not documents etc.

You will just have to put this down to experience with 'E'- one not to be repeated.
