My rights to cancel a teletext holiday ?

Hi there ,
I would so appreciate someone’s help on this ..
I booked a holiday through teletext this morning and then later realised that I’d booked the wrong hotel .. whilst the name was confirmed to me I had no idea there was a hotel called this name on both Tenerife and Gran Canaria (I really
Had no preference over which canary island so this wasn’t what I was looking at .. just simply the hotels ) .. it’s turns out the reviews I was looking at were Tenerife but ended up with the Gran Canaria (as just he no idea there would be another hotel called the same long name ) .. i then looking at the reviews of where I booked I was horrified as the reviews are awful (boughts of D&V , very unclean , awful food ) i would never ever of agreed to booking here .. and Most certainly not for the price I agreed !!

This is a holiday we have been saving for 6 years !! And I’ve been searching for the right one for a year ! AND i have a phobia of being sick !! So this really couldn’t be much worse for me !! 😩

Anyway , after contacting them (I’ve paid £800 and due to pay the remaining £3,000 tmrw ) they say I have absolutely no right to cancel , they are no cancellation fees id have to pay the full amount ?? Is this true ?? Even after contacting them just an hour after and we aren’t due to travel for three months ??

I can pay to move the holiday (£200) which is great but I do feel upset I need to pay this amount when I feel sure it should of been made clear which hotel I was looking at ?

What would happen if I just don’t pay the rest ? And start a dispute with my bank to return the £800? I’ve screen shot the live chat I’m asking for a refund with teletext and my bank say this should be sufficient but am I legally bound by teletext and I could get in lots of trouble ?

So sorry for the long post ., I have never posted on here before and so appreciate any help .

Thanks so much
Anna

Just pay the £200 it's the price you have to pay for your mistake.

You say you booked a holiday, do you mean flights and hotels together? If so, the hotels on Teletext website show the resort they are in. Also the flight details show the airport the flights are landing at. They should have been fairly big clues as to what Canary Island the holiday was on? I find it a little confusing when you say “it should have been made clear”?

Travel bookings tend not to have any cooling off period. You say you can lay £200 to move the holiday.... is that to the correct hotel on Tenerife, or to an alternative in Gran Canaria?
  • Ah yes it does seem
Stupid doesn’t it .. I was going based on the hotel and didn’t even pay attention to the island it was on .. I realise that’s beyond stupid !! .. I think I just need to take the £200 hit for being an idiot and yes that means I can change it for the hotel
I want but a different month and very inconvenient flight times and airport .. but that teaches me for being an idiot .

I’m just surprised there is no calling off period at all

Thanks so much for your response

I agree, possibly one of the most warned against outfits in the travel industry.

OP you say you have been saving for 6 years and searching for a year, in all that time did you not see a warning about Teletext that might have been enough to make you take extra care when booking with them? I do understand how difficult it can be when you are excited about booking, but to not even question which Island they were sending you to seems to be an odd thing to do for some one who has taken so long to research what they want.

I go to the Canaries quite a bit, mainly outside the JUly/August time as it can be very cheap to get there if you can be a day or two flexible with flights. The islands are very different and appeal to different people so it is worth choosing one that has what you want, it is also important to choose an area that suits your holiday style. There are some really excellent places out there, but also some I wouldn't consider going to.

What is the point of berating the OP for the mistake she's made? She clearly feels bad enough about things already and is looking for help, if any is available.

It might help others in future if there was some understanding of what drew the op to this company.

If you're dropping nearly 4 grand on a holiday why do you not care where you go?

And only £200 to change, looks like you will have to just pay up
