I've just received an email from Santander. Basically, to use my on-line account in future, I will have to have a mobile phone. But why should I be made to have one? My Barclaycard PIN Sentry works perfectly well for Barclays.

Anyway, my question is, do I stay with Santander (123 account) or move? And if so, where, as (with only a state pension) I can only deposit £634 each month?.

I am tempted to forego all the 'extras, and open a simple account with Lloyds, the last bank left open where I live.

I've not had an email yet, but are you sure it requires a mobile, at the moment Santander also do OTP to landlines

You don't need a smartphone and app, Santander liek most other banks will offer OTP via text message, so dumb phone is enough.
    Exactly.
Also, it isn't new that people need an OTP - for every new payee, for every new SO, you need an OTP. I wonder how the OP has been coping with this to date?

From once I've experienced it only happens the first time you use a retailer the bank then authorises all subsequent transactions with them
From Sept onwards, you'll need the OTP to logon

As above, how were you able to manage without the Santander OTP to date? If it is indeed too difficult for you, you seem to have the answer already: move your account to Barclays. They offer you a choice between their PINSENTRY gadget and mobile PINSENTRY on a smartphone*. So if ever you want to change your mind and use one of these devil's phones, you can. I for one was delighted when Barclays implemented the mobile PINSENTRY as that saves me from hunting for the darn card reader and the card.

    * You don't need a smartphone to receive a Santander OTP. A very basic PAYG phone will do.

    The email starts off:

If you check the "Changes to Online Banking" details on the Santander website one of the FAQ's states -

"Will I be able to continue using Online Banking without a mobile?
We require you to have a mobile phone because for some transactions we need to text you a One Time Passcode for authorisation. This is highlighted in our terms and conditions."
