Doctors Surgeries told to stop using 0844 Numbers.

My GP surgury had an 0871 number, 12p per min landline for nearly a year before it was changed to an 0844 number. The surgury received many compalaints but ignored them all. It's about time they, the GP's, remembered they are there to give us a service. :eek:

You need to bombard the practice and your local PCT with complaints and force them to carry out their remit, doctors have a contract with PCTs and, as mentioned in post #20 above, the doctors are in breach of that contract.

My local doctor's have an 08448 number. I've never seen these before. A quick look round the internet suggests that it's a not a premium rate number. Some places suggest that they are local calls from anywhere in the country. What are 08448 numbers intended for?

i stand to be corrected but there was an article in the daily mirror on the 10th november regarding these phone numbes, saying it costs 40 p a minute from mobile numbes and 5p from a landline.

i work in a hospital a number of GP surgeries use these numbers now as it generates money for themselves when patients phone the surgery. I do not agree with it at all.

They are best described as Semi Premium rate revenue sharing numbers and the ones used by doctors are usually charged at 5p a minute 24/7 from a BT Landline.

Weekday daytime (the time when people have to call their GP's surgery), to call a standard UK 01, 02 or 03 number, someone on BT Together Option 1 (i.e. still most of the population) would have to pay 6p connection and 3¼p per minute.

However, to call one of these SurgeryLine 0844 numbers from the same residential landline costs 6p connection and 5p per minute (i.e. the connection charge is the same but the per minute cost is 53.85% higher).

Calling 0844 numbers from mobile phones is even more expensive (up to 40p per minute IIRC) and, from a public phone box, it's also outrageously expensive.

Companies that provide 0844 numbers for Doctors Surgeries normally use a number from the 5p a minute 0844 numbering ranges,so they can extract maximum revenue share.:mad:
