Room in roof insulation

I came across this whilst researching possible insulation solutions for our Victorian semi. Various websites suggest that we could get a grant to obtain this for free, however further digging reveals this is only if we are in receipt of certain benefits (which we are not).
Anyway, it looks like it may be a good solution for our attic room. The room is part of the original build, rather than a conversion, and has no insulation at all on the walls or sloping ceilings other than the original lime and lath plaster (there is also a loft space above this which has some fibre insulation). There is a pretty good chance there is asbestos in the artex type ceiling covering. There is a dormer window (around 2m wide) and a small velux window, and a couple of radiators. The floor area is 5.7 x 4.2m.
Has anyone done a similar project and can give an indication of likely (unsubsidised) costs? Who would I need to look for to quote for this - would any builder be familiar with this type of project or would i need a more specialist insulation firm?
I guess the cheapest option would be to fix the insulation board on top of the existing plaster to avoid the mess of removing the lath and potential asbestos?

Both websites i found googling the term said "It is not means tested" The second one said "...and you don’t need to be on benefits. In most case its 100% fully funded"
Anyway just get some quotes, i think i would try some plastering companies first to see if they will do insulated plaster board.
But ultimately Its probably best to just byte the bullet and get it tested for asbestos and deal with it and keep the headroom.0 -
Thanks. You’re probably right. I’m a little nervous about going through any of those websites I guess. They’ll no doubt call relentlesssly as soon as I put my number in the online enquiry form. But I have no idea who else to ask, so might have to just give it a go.0

I also looked into possibility of obtaining a roof insulation grant but only came to the same conclusion that one has receive benefits to get help.
If you're still going ahead with insulating then check for headroom and building regulations. If I recall correctly this type of work will require BR approval.
One thing to be aware of that the cost of getting it done most likely will be much greater than cost of heating over many years. Obviously, there are other significant benefits to insulated room but I thought it's worth mentioning since this is mse website.0 -

Thank you! All very good points. I think actually to do the job we want in there will be a fairly substantial project. So probably one to save for over a slightly longer term.0
