Puzzled as to why you paid the leccy when he hadnt left you with a working shower, even if he had to charge you a bit more.

    6mm cable
    6mm squared.

    It is a cross-sectional area.

To the OP, no your husband absolutely cannot do this if he doesn't know what he is doing. You will end up with a fire.

You can get a Triton multifit 8.5kw from B&Q for around £80 which will be fine on your existing cable size
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Yes, but it's probably physically different from the current one, which leaves the OP having to remodel tiles etc. around it in the shower cubicle .....

The current one was working before the last electrician arrived. It stopped working at that time. It's something the electrician has done outwith the shower. The shower did not coincidentally fault itself while the electrician was there.

    i have a 7.5kw shower for 2 reasons.

    1. it did not need any exotic cabling so the install was cheap
    2. i paid £20 for it out of a bargain bin at Wickes.

it works fine as a "secondary" shower over bath in the family bathroom in case boiler breakdown kills the mixer shower in our ensuite. and the flow is gentle which suits washing our 4yo's hair in the bath.

6mm² cable is rated for 32A buried in an insulated wall, 38A in conduit, or 46A clipped to a wall. An 8.5Kw shower will draw approx 36A at full power - This is going to be marginal on 6mm² cable and one would also need to factor in the total length of the cable.

Triton recommend using 10mm² cable on all their showers rated 8.5Kw and above.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Either way, it left us without a shower though and they didn’t attempt to fix it or explain the situation properly.
Perhaps they didn't fancy the chances of routing a new cable behind the tiling in the shower?

When we were rewired, our electricians installed a new10 mm2 cable, but left it free at both ends. i.e. by consumer unit in a cupboard and coiled in loft, ready for when we replace the shower in that bathroom. The assumption on both sides was that the tiles etc would be coming off when the replacement took place.
