Dog diabetes advice

Hi, my dog, Mason, was recently diagnosed with diabetes, all the information I've read on various sources has all been very good and I've learnt a lot. It is all so much to take it, I want to make sure I'm doing the best I can for Mason.
I've seen lots of post for home checking BG, most ppl use the alphatrak 2, but I have seen some ppl use freestyle lite.
My question is, does it have to be one that's specifically for dogs like the alphatrak or does a human one work the same, like the freestyle lite. The alphatrak is very expensive and I don't really have that much money spare to buy one, but I also don't wanna spend out money on a cheaper one for it to be rubbish and I have to save to buy the more expensive one. Any advice from anyone would be great.
Thanks

Thank you, I have read through that thread already, it's so confusing what to do for the best.
