Sytem/Convetional Boiler to Combo Boiler

Hi All,

We are doing refurbishment of our new home, completed on June 25 and plan to move by end of month.

The new house got a Worcester Boiler fitted in the kitchen ( flue in the side wall towards the garden) water tank in the attic and tghe hot water cylinder in a cupboard in the master bedroom.

Yesterday we were checking the all the taps and we we opened the Bath tub shower , the pressure was less than what we used to experience in our old rented home ( Combination boiler Worcester Greenstar 30i)

The previous owner has installed another shower on the other end of the bath tub that has been connected to the sower pump in the cupboard along with the hot water cylinder and wife was very upset and it was making a sound the moment we turn it on)

I discussed with the plumber who is working and he said as its a System boiler you will get the same pressure and cant be increased until you change it to Combination Boiler. ( He quoted me £3000 but gave me a discount for £200 so the final price £2800 for replacing the existing boiler with the combination boiler, removing all the old stuff i.e including tank , cylinder and the piping and installing the new boiler at the same place)

Need help of experienced members

1) Is it better to change from Sytem / Conventional to Combi?

2) As we are doing refurbishing and property is empty is it better o to do now or wait for a year or 2 and then get it replaced.

3) I got quotation from https://www.dgheating.org.uk and they quoted me £2750.00 for replacing existing boiler Worcester 30 model

4) If I replace the boiler its better to go for Worcester 30i or Worcester 8000 Style 35kw as I hav eto a bit more but gives a more modern look ( Any reviews)

Thanks in advance.

Nah. I have a combi boiler, and would love to go back to conventional. I have to wash my hands in cold water. GF turns on hot tap when she sits down to pee, as it takes that long for hot to come through. :)

If you have a tank in the loft, you can get it raised to give a faster shower, or install a pump to give the same effect.

Did these quotes actually involve measuring your water pressure?

I would not change from a system boiler to a combi myself and would not have a Worcester boiler.

I suggest that you get several more quotes from good installers who will give you a choice of various different boiler manufacturer's and not just the one that is most profitable for them.

Read this thread which will inform you about far better boilers and why to avoid Worcester.

Do you have good water pressure in the kitchen? If your pressure is good, keep the system boiler and get an unvented hot water cylinder. You will then get mains pressure hot water at all your taps/ shower without a pump.

Just be aware that an unvented hot water cylinder needs to be serviced every year, and can be dangerous if not serviced: this Mythbusters video shows you what can happen with an unvented hot water cylinder if it malfunctions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbreKn4PoAc
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

The new WB that looks like an iPhone is exactly the same inside as the old ones & you will pay around £500 extra for that, WB aren't the best & certainly not the most economical despise what which tells you
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

That is a rather silly "made for maximum effect" video and it is no different to inflating a tyre to more than twice it's maximum rated pressure!

There is no legal requirement for an unvented cylinder to be serviced annually, just like there is no legal requirement for a gas boiler to be serviced annually.

Guidance and recommendation are not the same as legal requirement.

    Read the G3 regs:

I thought with a system boiler the hot water was at mains pressure anyway?
A combination boiler will be limited to your mains water pressure or the rate at which the boiler can supply hot water which may be less.

A combi is fine for a 1 bath house/flat but most good plumbers would never recommend it for 2 bathroom house.

Utter Rubbish if he said its the only way. An unvented cylinder should be at almost street pressure, and saves replacing a new boiler.

And if the mains pressure is poor you would need a Pressure Vessel anyway.

A system boiler heats a tank of water, The tank can be vented with just the pressure from the loft tank, Or un-vented meaning its at mains pressure.

There are only 2 people in our household and the main downsides to the combi we have found are :-

    1. What seems a long wait for hot water to come through the tap, although in reality it's only probably 10 seconds or so.
    2. It takes a lot longer to run a bath than the old system with a hot water cylinder.

We've had a Worcester combi boiler for about 10 years now with no problems.
