Apparently can't drill a hole to save my life?

Its annoying when it happens but I always find using a centre punch to make a slight indentation helps the drill bit from wandering. You can always get drill guides as well0

In our house there are spots where it's virtually impossible to make a hole in the wall. Try a couple of inches either side and it goes in like a dream. The problem isn't down to hitting a steel lintel or anything similar, as it happens in random places and drives me nuts.0

The house I live in was built in 1893 and has walls made of brick on the outside and then another couple of feet of rubble and blocks of stone. Presumably because the inside was so uneven, there's a layer of plaster about 4 inches thick in places.
This means that when I drill into the wall to mount something reasonably heavy, I'm often just drilling into the layer of plaster and can't get a decent fix. I've mounted TV brackets using resin fixings. You could look them up on YouTube.
In some places it's really hard to drill a hole at all and that's where one of the bits of stone (maybe granite) comes a bit closer to the surface. You'd need an SDS drill to get through that.0
