Registry Checkers/Cleaners

Hi All,

I am having to return my laptop to work on thursday this week as i am starting a new job next week.

There are things on here i wouldn't want to be seen by others (online banking details etc)

I have dleted all documents but i am aware that IT people can retrieve those, is there a way of clearing the registry etc without reloading all of windows?

Thanks in advance

Mark

  • For a general cleanup, delete all your personal files, then run these
one after the other (tick all the boxes).

You can use a free program called eraser which overwrites deleted data . It is configurable -via preferences- to overwrite from 1 pass to higher security levels of overwrite. There are other progs. but this one I know.
  • This will clear the registry for you, making the machine generally run faster

This will clean the HDD, which is what you really want to do rather than the registry

  • I wonder what they'll do with the laptop once you've left - why not ask them if they'd be willing to sell it to you? Then you won't have to worry about your confidential details falling into the wrong hands.

Otherwise, I'd be inclined to run the restore disk that should have come with a work laptop; and then use cleandisk (the link to theabsolute.net above) to bullet-proof the remaining space on the hard disk.

My laptop is much slower than when I bought it. I have tried and removed several progs. Will running the above be of benefit to me. I am not trying to loose any data. I do use CCleaner.

    Thanks,

Someone told me yesterday that they run c cleaner frequently. I've never used it at all. That is untill today. I picked up the free verison from Web User and started it off. After it had run through everything, a window suggested that the next stage would remove all the files which appeared before me. I could see many that I clearly recognised and panicked thinking that to proceed, would remove half the content of my computer, so I aborted.

When I came to enter the many forums I use, I had to re'join.

Islandman, did you try logging in to the forums again? My Ccleaner clears data, which you can choose to save, then after running Cc I simply log in again to the forums, including MSE

Both the above will make your laptop quicker, it won't be as fast as when you first had it but I'd be supriised if you didn't notice the difference

Yes Fortyfoot, I did have to log in again.

More importantly, I thought "EYE" was the only one using the EYE.

Yours reminded me that I had one on file somewhere.
