Very ill inbetween jobs...financial help?

Hi everyone, hopefully this is the right place to post this, asking for advice on behalf of my sister.
So up until last Saturday she was working for company A and had worked her notice, ready to start her new job on Wednesday. She has not yet signed her contract, that was planned for part of her induction on Wednesday, so technically unemployed, but only temporarily. She has however been In hospital since Tuesday evening and is currently undergoing a very very big operation which is going to potentially take 6 weeks to recover from. She rents a flat privately with her boyfriend, they have only been there about a month. She hasn't claimed any benefits before, can anyone shed any light on what they might get help with and where to start? This is all a complete mystery to me!

Universal Credit is a means tested benefit https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/
To claim her and boyfriend both have to claim. Whether there is any entitlement will depend on joint income and savings.

Can use a benefit calculator to test entitlement https://www.entitledto.co.uk/

New style ESA is not means tested and is claimed as an individual https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-style-employment-and-support-allowance. To qualify would need to have paid, or been credited with NI, from April 2016 to March 2018.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Has she still got the job?

How much does her BF earn?

Has she held a job for the last two years?

  • She has had a job for the past 2 years yes, her boyfriend I'm not entirely sure how much he actually earns, I don't think it's a lot. He works full time but I think he has a fairly low income, no savings at all.

Has she still got the job she was due to start?
    - if so, is she now employed but off sick or have they pushed her start date back?
-- if she is employed by them what's the company policy on sick pay?

Get your sister to use the links posted in the thread above as that will guide her about benefit entitlement, but it's several weeks before any money is received so she would need to apply for an advance...
