Driving a deceased person's car to their funeral

Hello everyone

My dad sadly passed this week and I'm organising his funeral.

He had a lovely car which we spent a lot of time together in and rather than spending money on limos when there is very few of us to go in one I think it would be lovely to go in his car.

Does anyone have any idea if this would be possible? I was going to ask my friend to drive it, would my dads insurance extend his policy for week and allow someone else to drive?

Anyone got any experience of such

Thankyou

This wouldn't work. As soon as the insurers find out that the policyholder has passed away, they will cancel the policy.

Should the worst happen they wouldnt cover anyone - best buy a 1 day insurance and hope you dont have an accident.

Who will be the executors and would they be happy to risk an asset in this way?

It could probably be driven if a friend has driving other cars cover on their policy. There are a few companies such as Direct Line and LV which don't require the vehicle to have its own insurance.

I'm not sure how it would be covered when parked up though, eg outside the church.

Probably best to get a definitive answer from the insurance company. Some are more helpful than others.

You're going to need to sort insurance anyway - remember that you cannot have a taxed car uninsured. Will you be selling the car? Or will you be inheriting it?

I think although a few do allow it with no insurance on the car, most don't. A lot of policies don't even include it these days.

seville_2003, I'm very sorry for your loss & I think using the
lovely car which we spent a lot of time together in
would be a lovely touch at his funeral.

That said, most insurance companies will not help, so look at getting the best value for a single day (or week) as part of the funeral costs. I'm presuming the estate can run to that, as otherwise you may only be allowed what the Funeral Director agrees - but their insurance *may* stretch to the family car as an alternative to a limo but they might have to drive it.

All the very best, please take things gently and may all the admin etc go as smoothly as possible amidst the very rough waters of grief.

The insurance may allow cover to continue for the executor. This happened when my aunt died and her son was able to use the car as executor

Not entirely true. More Than gave me 42 days cover to allow me to dispose of the car.

It's worth asking the Insurer - but they may want to see a copy of the will & only provide cover for the Executor.

A lovely thing to do. I hope your insurer is helpful and finds a way to cover you legally.

Not all - my father's insurance company made me (as executor) the policy holder for a month on his car when he died, at no extra cost, to allow me to drive and arrange the sale of the car. They were every helpful.
