Can I claim VAT from my mobile contract when working outside the EU

Hi
I currently have a mobile contract in the UK. I’ve been working outside of the EU for the past four years and have informed my mobile provider of my non-EU address. Can I claim back the VAT from over this time since I was not physically using the service in the UK. I did raise this with them and they told me that because I took the contract out in the UK originally that they had to charge me VAT continuously until the contract ended. I don’t want to end the contract because I’m on a good deal.
