Sky soundbox without sky q

Looking at buying a sky soundbox but a bit concerned that one review mentioned it was pointless without sky q. As it happens we do have sky q but maybe in the future we might not. Does the soundbox really need q to function?

I remember watching Tech Moans's review of this on Youtube. With Sky Q it's meant to pick up some meta data so it knows what program you're watching and adjust the sound to suit. Without Sky Q it's not going to do this.

I'd imagine it would still work but without that extra ability, you can probably pick up a normal sound bar for a fraction of the cost.0
