Retailers charges on credit vs debit cards

My beloved and I are off shopping tomorrow to buy an engagement ring. Being a good money saving person, I suggested that he be prepared to haggle a bit, or at least try to get a discount for cash.

I know retailers have to pay x% if you pay on a credit card. Do they also have to pay x% if you pay with a debit card? IE is paying by debit card the same as paying by cash or not?

We'd rather not be trawling the streets with a sparkly-ring's worth of cash in our pockets.

Firtsly don't go high street it's a rip-off, I got a ring from the Diamond Trade Centre in Manchester and saved at least 30% on high street prices and got a better diamond, got a wedding band from the Jewellery quarter in Birmingham and saved at least 40% on high street prices. But some smaller retailers do pay a charge to CC, I just haggle for cash and pay by CC, never had a problem, some people now prefer as they don't like a lot of cash on premises!

Might be worth the trip to Birmingham to save your pennies and be a true MSE'r. There has been a few threads about this lately. (I've posted on most!) do a search

Banks charge merchants a percentage of the transaction (up to 4% or more) on credit cards, but it's a flat fee (50p-£1) on debit cards. You may be able to negotiate a bit more of a discount for paying on debit rather than credit, but you lose the protection that paying on CC gives you.
