Printer problems

Hi there,
I have a HP Photosmart 6510 printer and we've had this problem before where it will print a status report from the user tools menu without fault, but won't print any documents, it will say there's a paper jam and then just throws out blank paper.
Does anyone know how to fix this please, aside from buying a new printer (looking for recommendations!).
The printer has been good, but every printer we've had, hasn't been without problems.
A solution to the problem would be good!
Thanks in advance.
