How do I find out about previous claims of Child benefit?

Hi all

I've recently got a pension forecast for my mother, but it looks really off, and her year to claim a pension is out by 20 years? I believe the years where she was a house mum and received child benefit have not been counted. Is there some way I can fish this information out, this must be going back quite a long time ago.

Many thanks

Have you got the right person? 20 years is a long time to be out of kilter
  • and her year to claim a pension is out by 20 years

What do you mean by this?

What is her State Pension entitlement? It may not be worth worrying about

Unless you have Power of Attorney, you can't get any information. Your mother will have to speak to the relevant bodies first and give them permission to speak to you.

I assumed this was a typo and OP meant that the number of qualifying years is out by about 20 years.

OP, mother can ring and request her NI history. That will tell her what years she has been credited with and which years are not showing as qualifying years. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/national-insurance-enquiries-for-employees-and-individuals

One possibility for a shortfall is that if your mother worked before 1977 she may have paid a reduced rate of NI (married woman’s stamp) which unfortunately means those years do not count towards state pension. https://www.gov.uk/reduced-national-insurance-married-women

If she gets the NI record she will be able to see if the missing years were working years or child raising years. Note that under current rules NI credits for receipt of Child Benefit only apply while child is under 12 - I don’t know if this was previously different.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Home responsibility protection I think was the means of gaining NI credits prior to Child Benefit ( which I think used to be credited up to age 16)

Thanks for that, very helpful. Back of mind was telling me that the age limit used to be higher but I couldn’t find anything to confirm this. The link you provided does confirm that eligibility used to go to 16 (see eligibility). The change appears to have been from April 2010.

If the CB was claimed in the father's name, she won't have received credits.

    Thanks for the info all.

I helped my mother register for a gov gateway and gov verify account, but could not bring up her details online.

I filled in a paper form and sent off, and her state pension age is in 5 years time but the statement says it is 20 years off.

I think maybe her details are wrong, which is why I couldn't access her info online.

    This?

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-a-state-pension-statement

According to the statement your mother reaches SPA in 2044 rather than 2024?

She should give the Future Pension Centre a ring to discuss the matter.
