Can I be really thick here and ask a question about Digital Photoframes??

I am really sorry if this sounds stupid. I haven't a clue!
My parents love looking at their pictures - particularly of my children (their only granchildren). My dad downloads his photos onto the computer and they often look at them there. I was think of getting them a digital photoframe for christmas. I know the frames take memory cards. Presumably this is the same card that would be in your camera. So, could you just take pictures, take the memory card out and slot it into the frame? (and you edit/delete photos from this, or is it just a viewing tool?) What about if he wanted a selection of favourite photos to be shown - would we have to buy another memory card - 1 for his camera and 1 for the photoframe? I just don't understand how the photos are stored. The pictures he has on his computer already presumably he could put back onto a card to put back into the frame? If they wanted to show their holiday snaps to friends, presumably they could just load them into the frame and take the frame out with them to show the pictures?? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions.......Thanks for your help.

yes, depending on what type of card, SD, Compact flash and XD are usually catered for

(and you edit/delete photos from this, or is it just a viewing tool?)
more expensive ones will allow limited resizing

    recommended and not expensive

I just don't understand how the photos are stored.
Normally in the memory card, but more expensive ones have a limited flash memory that can show photos without a card

    Yes

They could do, but they usually require a power supply so that would have to go too
  • They dont give you any editing ability they just display the contents of the memory card.

I would buy a 2nd memory card for use in the photo frame only. copy the images from the camera to the PC, edit do what ever you want to the photos then put them back on the card for the photo frame.

The frames do take most common types of memory card but may not take all of them especially cards like memory sick or XD cards tend to be few and far between on photo frames so just buy either an SD card or compact flash for the photo frame. some photo frames have built in memory where you transfer the images to the built in memory also.

as for showing sets of photos you could buy a card for the holiday a card for somthing else, smaller cards are not very expensive especially SD and compact flash.
  • this one will crop images, but as I pointed out, these tend to be in the top end of the market

I have just got a Kodak SV811, 8" frame from Amazon. It has its own memory and takes various cards and usb drive. As suggested by Red Rose Exile I have bought an SD card with reader. I bought this card (2GB), on ebay and it comes with free reader for £9.48. I have used it with a usb drive and the frame defaults to this for slide show when attached, otherwise it plays from the internal memory. I like it, it is a present which I will have to sort out!

When you have the memory card in the frame, can you just leave the frame on the side and see the photos appear as a sideshow, like you do with your screensaver?

Yes, but I have only done it with the usb drive, I presume it will do it for an inserted card. The frame is now boxed and gift wrapped for Xmas with some of her favourite photos filling the internal memory.
