Advice! Will our policy pay out?

We are due to fly out to Menorca for 1 week on the 9th August. 4 weeks ago my father-in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and we were told he had 6-8 weeks to live (at most). We have insurance with Explorer and after checking the Ts and Cs I'm really confused about whether they will pay out if we have to cancel.
Until he was diagnosed on the 13th June, we were not aware that he had cancer and was not being investigated for it. He has been quite unwell since February but was being treated for muscular pain in his back (turns out he has tumours in his spine) as well as conditions relating to his heart ( he had a cardiac arrest about 18months ago).
The policy states that it will not pay out if it is a pre-existing condition even if it had not been diagnosed.
I'm relaly worried as we can't afford to loose all that money - it's adding more stress to an already very stressful time.

You havent told us when you bought the insurance.

Oh, and a small point of pedantry but I have to mention it as it bugs the life out of me....it is "lose" and not "loose"

All you can do is call the claim line and begin the process.

Don't ask them if you are covered.

Simply call and say since you bought insurance a close relative has fallen ill with a terminal condition they knew nothing about and you need to cancel the holiday.

Then ask what you need to do next to commence a claim. It is likely to take a while as they will need to check records, but sitting there worrying about whether you are covered doesn't get you anywhere at a stressful time.
  • We purchased the insurance in April.

    Genuine typo! Sorry bradders1983

    In which case contact them.
  • At this time we are still not sure if we will need to cancel so don't really want to start the process.
The situation is slightly more complicated as we are going on holiday with my parents. They will not be covered as it's not a close relative of theirs. If we have to cancel, they would still have to go.
My husband is saying if his father has passed before the holiday then we will still be going (we have 2 young kids who are very excited) but obviously if his father is still here or has passed just before we are due to go then the situation will be different.
The holiday was supposed to be a special one as my mum had breast cancer last year and we also lost my grandad to cancer last year (her dad). So we wanted to spend some quality time together.

Without wanting to sounds insensitive....couldn't you all just go and if the worst does happen whilst you are away, find flights back at short notice. Menorca isnt too far away from the UK.

Also as you are only going for one week,if anything happens whilst you are away you will be home in a few days anyway,i know this will not make things right but your parents will be going what ever happens and at least your children will get a holiday.
    Hope you get sorted.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place. I genuinely feel for you. What a horrible dilemma.

Of course you want to go on holiday with your family for that celebration, but at the same time your husband's family need you.

What other family does he have to help support them, siblings etc?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)
