I recently sold in the west end. Got windows replaced at the back. They were rotting in places. It made a massive difference to the temperature of the whole flat and of course noise. That winter last March was horrendous. Viewers liked the fact the windows had been replaced.
We did do a lot of other work but nothing else structurally, we were in just under 2 years & made back a lot more than the outgoings on the work were (I know house values tend to shoot up rapid round here though)
Definitely worth while speaking to a valuer at EA & see if your likely to get your money back. Fingers crossed!

We have wooden windows that were made in the 1920s. How long do you think the UPVC will last for?
  • You can get the original windows refurbished which will reduce drafts and keep the period feel. Another advantage is building can breath better with the original windows. Depends on the age of the building but my building is 1889, the 3 flats that had UPVC fitting have damp problems the 3 that keep the original wooden windows don't

If it's anything like certain areas of Edinburgh with the tenement flats putting in UPVC will not be allowed, may already be in breach of local laws / historic preservation (but of course many take the chance).
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

The council has been putting in UPVC windows in neighbouring flats so it shouldn't be problem, it's not a great neighbourhood and I don't think people are that bothered about preserving the "character" of the flats to be honest.

I definitely think buyers will prefer the UPVC - it's just whether we'd actually make the investment back when we sell in five years or so.

It's more like diggingdude says. You won't really make that back, but you should get to 'keep' it. If the windows come back as crap on a survey or if spotted during viewings, buyers are very likely to use that as an excuse for a lower offer/reduction.
