Groupon Spain

Hi all,
A thrifty idea popped into my head to save a bit of cash on an upcoming trip to Granada, Spain by using Groupon vouchers for restaurants. There are lots available but I wondered if anyone has any experience of this? I’d have to buy the coupons through Groupon Spain and wondered if there are likely to be any restrictions for non-Spanish (ie U.K.) users?

Thanks!

Don't buy the Groupon deals - if they are independent restaurants just go there and ask if they will match the Groupon Deal. That way the restaurant saves money and you save money. When you book a 'Groupon Deal' the restaurant typically pays around 25% commission to Groupon and then offers you a discounted dinner. Save the restaurant the 25% and they will welcome you with open arms and probably offer you the deal anyway! They save, you save. Simple.

A good idea in principle but my Spanish isn’t great and I don’t know if I’m that cheeky! Didn’t know the commission was that steep though.

Just returned from Spain and the majority of restaurants have a menu del dia which is very good value compared with their al a carte one. Many restaurants don't display them so you have to ask if they do one. Some finish after lunch but many apply all day.

They usually cover 3 courses and include a drink. Bread is usually charged as an extra so if you don't want any then refuse it as soon as it appears.

We had some very good meals where each person got half a bottle of wine as part of the deal (and it was always very enjoyable).

Granada is a great place and in many bars you get a very good free tapas with a drink.

    Have a good time.

Agree the menu del dia can be exceptional value. Often it will only be in Spanish and if you ask for the menu in English it won't be offered. Granada is excellent for free tapas as Neil said which is very rare now in most of Spain.

You need to book well in advance for the Nasrid Palace in the Alhambra as it is booked up often weeks ahead. The rest of the gardens can be visited without a problem getting tickets on the day although pre-booking lets you bypass the queue.

I like Granada although it can be fiendishly hot. I visited at the start of October last year and temperatures were still in the high 30s.

Thanks for the suggestion - I’ve had similar set menu meals in Italy so will definitely ask. Do you have any recommendations for Granada, besides the Alhambra? We’re there in early August so realise it’ll be crazy hot during the day!

I always go to Lonely Planet for suggestions of places to visit, where to eat and for local travel advice - it's not just for backpackers!

Here's a page with some ideas
