Unsure if I am asking in the right part of the forum.

Hotel have taken some money from my account and then sent me a bill
Basically saying they have had an audit and realised that 14 months ago the transfer that didn't go through.
They sent me the original receipt but seem to be refusing to send me the latest receipt.

My main concern is can they hold my personal bank details for 14 month and then just use them without asking me?
They had six years. Better still to keep a check on your bank, as you would had noticed the error, but hey, ignorance is bliss!!!!

As it is more than 6 months then (I believe) they've breached a code of practice or other financial control mechanism by taking the money without first giving you notice. This could allow you to reclaim the money.

How would I find out if this is correct?

I might be minded to do some searching if you're first minded to reply to post #9. :)

Drip feeding information really doesn't help - what's the full story ?

Go to hotel (payed for online)
    stay at hotel
    buy drinks in bar
    put on room
    go to bed
get up pay bar bill (but it must fail - didn't look at bank statement)
    leave
14 months later get charge on debit card (no new Receipt)
get invoice copy of failed receipt in post

    Fully Story

So you had the drinks and now you've paid for them having had the use of the money for 14 months. Sorted.

I guess the OP just wants clarification of what was being charged for. The hotel know the amount - they must also know the breakdown of costs. OP asking for this is not unreasonable.

didn't know that they hadn't taken the money originally

How can you not know the payment wasn't taken in the first place ?

If it were me, I would check my statements and cross of any spending I made eg hotel tick, meal out tick, drinks at bar tick, money withdrawn from atm tick.

    Certainly reasonable.

Was it a uk hotel ?

    Yes UK Hotel
Emailed to ask for receipts and proof of what I am paying for
Got a sharp reply - no proof
    emailed again asking for proof
    no reply

My main concern is I know we had drinks but my dad was buying and paying for most of the rounds
At the time am sure I bought a couple of rounds but now as its 14 months later I just want some proof as I don't have any receipts myself to prove what I am now paying for

They may not have kept the breakdown of specifically what was ordered.

All they have is a discrepancy in their accounting which has been traced back to your transaction, and they have resubmitted it.

They've told you what it was for, i.e. "bar tab". If you genuinely think it's the wrong amount then you can challenge it. Getting a new receipt wouldn't really help as it would likely only be a payment receipt showing the amount, which you already know.

I assume it's a credit or debit card they will have charged it to (which?) - if you really want to force their hand you could challenge the transaction through your bank. If it's a credit card this is easier for you.

Unless you've got better evidence of what you were expecting to pay for (and it doesn't sound like you do) I'm not sure how the breakdown would help you.
