Additional inscription on headstone - cost & paid from estate

Options
Father is being cremated, & we as family are having the ashes returned.
His parents are buried, & so we are thinking of having the ashes scattered there, & an inscription added to the existing headstone.

What sort of cost would a simple/basic inscription be?

Would this, & the cemetery charge, be payable by the estate?

It will be a relatively small sum - can't remember the figures but adding Mum's name to Dad's headstone was £500 or so (2005). Not worth worrying whether it comes out of the estate, me and my brother just shared the cost.

My brother and I also shared the costs - we were the main beneficiaries anyway.

Do check the Cemetery/Churchyard rules - your stonemason should be able to advise.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

If it comes from the estate it will need to be approved by the residuary beneficiaries, and cannot be deducted from the estate for IHT purposes.

I was quoted similar - £500 ... haven't got round to having it done yet. As only executor and beneficiary I must make a note to discuss with myself about getting it sorted.
  • We paid £500 (this was within the last 6 months). The funeral director organised it and included it on his invoice. It was paid from the estate with the agreement of beneficiaries.
