Returning to ex-employer?

    Thanks for the replies all. Having spoken to my current employer they were happy for me to go part time to freelance for my ex employer.

    So I offered two days a week at an average freelance rate. They declined, no surprise. They said two days a week wasn't enough and that they wouldn't agree to my freelance rate anyway. At least I've been reminded of why I left in the first place!

    I know for a fact they've paid a premium for a variety of other professions (accounting / transport / stock control) in the business, but they don't value the role of designers. Frustrating.

    They also told me what the wage would be for the role (full time) and it was STILL less than what they offered my replacement. Laughable.

    A friend of mine who still works there seems to think this was some sort of test to see if I'm interested in returning full time, as they will potentially need to dismiss my replacement.

    Check contractor day rate and do it that way for the month.

    if you can free up more days offer to do as and when or on a per project basis.

    Premium rates and they have reduced overheads/risk but get their jobs done.
    Win win

    Taking it to a B2B relationship rather than employ is the way forward.

    Leave them to it or maybe cut the rate but be very tight on what you give in terms of hours.

    Why bother? Just forget it and go on working for your brother.
    Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

    Yep, leave it at that, if they want your expertise and all round brilliance then they ought to pay you a fair price for it.
    (Although I could be wrong, I often am.)

    Yes, that's fair enough. However I wasn't disgruntled and frustrated until the whole issue with the payrise / lack of promotion began.

    OP only became disgruntled after the company passed him over for promotion, for which he seemed particularly suited. They wanted him in a position to benefit the company, but no reward for his hard work and loyalty. I would hold out for more money, the company will come to its senses eventually. :D
