Questions re PPI claims for Mortages, Store Loans and Car Loan.

I know I have left things very late, but I intend to make a number of PPI claims. I have several questions which I would appreciate your help with please.
PPI Claims for Mortgages.
1: Is it best to use a lender’s online ‘check if I had PPI’ enquiry form or just submit a claim?
2: My wife and I have had a number of joint mortgages over the years. Do we each need to claim separately, or can one person claim for the both of us?
3: One mortgage was with Northern Rock. When they failed, our mortgage was ‘transferred’ (if I remember correctly it was a transfer of business not a re-mortgage but I’m not 100% sure) to Cheltenham & Gloucester. Some years later Lloyds acquired C&G’s business.
Presumably, I should submit a claim to NRAM (Northern Rock) for that period of the mortgage and to Lloyds for the C&G/Lloyds periods of the mortgage.
Retail Finance / Store Cards
My wife and I (but mostly in my wife’s name only) took out various loans through retailers, for various large ticket items, usually furniture and once for a fitted kitchen complete with appliances. Do I submit my claim to the retailer or the finance company used? In one instance the retailer is a small local company and not part of a large chain.
Again, with store cards, do I submit my claim to the retailer or the finance company?
Car Loan
Many years ago (1986!) I purchased a new car from a local car dealership. The dealership was taken over by a national chain of car dealers some years later. The finance for loan was provided by Renault Finance. Is a claim viable for a loan taken out so long ago? Would I submit my claim to the new car dealership or Renault Finance? Sadly, I no longer have any documentation.
Thanks in advance.

You submit one complaint (not claim) per policy (not per person).
You send the complaint to the seller, not to the finance provider.
The car loan was pre-regulation, so don't worry about that one.0 -

Thank you, that's very helpful and much appreciated.
You say that my car loan was 'pre-regulation'. What is the earliest date that one may complain about PPI?
I had some credit cards going back to 1995 and was wondering if they may have had PPI attached to them and whether it was worth lodging a complaint?
Regarding my mortgage PPI complaints, is it best to use a lender’s online ‘check if I had PPI’ enquiry form or just submit a claim?

2005 for third party sales. As far back as you want for banks etc.
You're unlikely to find anyone with records going back a quarter of a century. But at least ask if you had PPI before you put in a complaint - otherwise, what would you be complaining about?0 -

Most mortgages in the UK are arranged by mortgage brokers, estate agents and advisers. Not by the lenders. If yours was done by one of those, the bank wouldnt know what insurances you have.0
